An Expert Guide to Chronic Wound Care

Wounds are a fact of life. We all experience them in some way or another- from paper cuts and scrapes to more severe injuries such as burns or surgical wounds. However, there are some which are non-healing, such as venous ulcers and arterial ulcers. In Bakersfield, CA, some specialists assist with any chronic wound. They tailor a treatment based on the nature of your wound. Pay a visit to a Bakersfield wound care specialist for help. This blog post takes you through wound care.

Wound Care for Chronic Wounds

Generally, the body heals wounds on its own. However, some chronic wounds need care or attention to heal correctly. At times, there are some reasons for this that you may not be aware of. If you suffer from a chronic wound, make sure to visit a specialist who can identify the cause behind it and recommend ways to promote the healing process.

Chronic wounds take longer than normal ones, and in some cases, it may lead to complications such as infections or blood loss. Wound care specialists can treat chronic wounds with a combination of therapies, including mist therapy, debridement, and advanced biologics.

Why is Wound Care Essential?

A wound is always considered as an injury or damage to the skin. For instance, it could be due to accidents, surgery, diabetic ulcers, and so on. Wounds need proper care for the quick healing process. A wound is classified into four categories depending upon its type of closing- primary closure, secondary closure, tertiary closure, and fourth closure.

While some may heal on their own, there are some which need additional services. For instance, it may require the removal of dead tissues and cleaning the wound. They may use debridement or surgical techniques such as drainages to help in removing pus from a wound.

What Can You Expect During Your Visit?

You will first be put under examination by a specialist who will determine the cause of your chronic wound. Then they may advise you to have some tests conducted before starting any therapy or treatment on your wound. It is essential to identify the type of wound to be well-treated with proper medications and dressings.

Though it may look minor, it can lead to other complications if not treated properly. Your wound care professional should be able to provide you with a proper diagnosis and the different treatment options available for your chronic wound. Before starting any therapy or treatment for your chronic wound, you should carefully consider all pros and cons.

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment that delivers 100% oxygen under increased atmospheric pressure. It can treat various conditions and chronic wounds such as eczema and diabetic ulcers.

Using HBOT, the patient is placed inside a pressurized chamber which increases the concentration of oxygen. This is done so that now cells can benefit from more oxygen than they would if they were exposed to the standard atmosphere outside the chamber.

Chronic wounds and chronic wound care are broad topics. If you’ve been experiencing any of these symptoms, consider seeing wound care specialists to get an accurate diagnosis and the best treatment possible for your condition.
